HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 2 seed Southern Miss baseball team opens play in its 19th NCAA Tournament, Friday, when they take on No. 3 seed Samford in a 1 p.m. contest in the Auburn Regional at Plainsman Park.
The Golden Eagles (41-17) enter the event having won 19 of their last 21 games, which includes capturing the Sun Belt Conference tournament title last Sunday in a 6-2 victory over Louisiana. It marked the first league tournament title since 2019 and fifth under 14th-year head coach Scott Berry.
During the tournament, Southern Miss reached the 40-win plateau for the seven-straight season, which is tops in Division I baseball.
The game features two league Pitchers of the Year doing battle with Tanner Hall going for Southern Miss, who has posted a 12-3 record this season in 15 starts to capture top honors in the Sun Belt. He will face Samford junior right-hander Jacob Cravey, who is 9-2 with a 3.19 ERA and was voted top pitcher in the Southern Conference.
Friday's meeting marks the 10th time that the two teams will meet on the diamond with the Golden Eagles holding a 6-3 advantage over the Bulldogs (36-23). The two teams last met in 2016 in a three-game weekend series in Hattiesburg in which the home team won two of three contests.
This will be the second time for the Golden Eagles to play in the Auburn Regional. They originally came here for the 2010 regional, Berry's first year at the helm of the program, while coming back in 14 years for the Golden Eagle coach's final season.
Southern Miss holds a 29-38 record in NCAA Tournament play, having won the Hattiesburg Regional season before falling in the super regional to Ole Miss in two games. This will be the 10th time the program has been the No. 2 seed in a regional tournament.
The game can be seen via ESPN+ and heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network. The other game of the day features No. 4 Penn against No. 1 Auburn.
