HATTIESBURG, Miss. – On the heels of the retirement announcement of Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry, the Golden Eagles return to action Thursday for their final regular-season series when they play host to Louisiana at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
The series begins Thursday at 6 p.m., and will continue with a Friday 6 p.m., contest, before completing the set at 1 p.m., Saturday. Friday night's contest will be "Scott Berry Day" with the 14th-year head coach and his family honored prior to the game, while Saturday will mark senior day for seven players – Reece Ewing, Blake Johnson, Gabe Lacy, Danny Lynch, Rodrigo Montenegro, Christopher Sargent and Luke Trahan.
Â
The Golden Eagles (35-15 overall 20-7 Sun Belt) are tied atop the league standings with Coastal Carolina. Southern Miss must win one game against the Ragin' Cajuns (35-18, 17-10) to clinch at least the No. 2 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala. The Golden Eagles will tie for the league crown if they win as many games as the Chanticleers this weekend and will clinch the outright title if they win one more game than CCU over the last series.
Â
Southern Miss brings the nation's longest winning streak of 13 games into the series against the Cajuns that dates back to 1925. UL leads 29-28 in the overall meetings between the two schools, but the Golden Eagles have won the last two games which came last season in Lafayette.
Â
Sargent, who hit three home runs last weekend at ULM, now has 12 for the year and has belted 49 for his career, which is one shy of putting him in a third-place tie for that category in a career at the school. The senior from Wilmer, Ala., has also hit safely in 15-straight games. Right fielder Carson Paetow is next with a 10-game hitting streak.
Â
Shortstop Dustin Dickerson leads the team in hitting with a .325 batting average to go along with a team-best 18 doubles and 31 RBI. He currently finds himself tied for third place in career doubles at the school with Dylan Burdeaux (2014-17), Jarrett Hoffpauir (2002-04) and Kyle Logan (1994-97) for third place.
Â
During the 13-game winning streak, the Golden Eagles are hitting .329 with 333 doubles, three triples, 27 home runs and 121 RBI, while the pitching staff has registered a 3.26 ERA with 149 strikeouts and just 39 walks over 116 innings.
Â
Following the UL series, the Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday at the Sun Belt Tournament.
