HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In a stretch which sees Southern Miss baseball play 12 of 16 games away from home, the Golden Eagles return home for a midweek contest against Southeastern Louisiana, Tuesday, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The game can be seen on ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Southern Miss returns home after taking two of three contests over the weekend at Troy to improve to 16-10 overall and 5-4 in Sun Belt Conference play. The Lions enter the game at 16-12 after dropping two of three at home last weekend to Incarnate Word.
The SLU contest is the only home contest this week as the Golden Eagles return to the road at Old Dominion for a Thursday-Saturday league series before traveling to Alabama for a midweek affair next Tuesday.
This contest marks the 127th meeting between the two programs with the Golden Eagles holding a 78-48 overall advantage. The Golden Eagles have won the last three meetings in the series, including an 8-1 victory in Hammond earlier this season.
Southern Miss homered three times in that triumph as Tate Parker led the way with three hits and three RBI. Slade Wilks helped the Golden Eagles jump out early in the contest, opening the game's scoring with an RBI double in the first. The junior designated hitter then homered to right in the third, a solo shot. Southern Miss then added three more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to account for their other runs. Billy Oldham, in his second career Golden Eagle start, gave up a run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts to earn the victory. Kros Sivley then followed with three shutout innings, including three strikeouts, and Justin Storm threw a scoreless ninth.
In the Troy series over the weekend, starting pitcher Tanner Hall registered his first complete game of his 25 starts at Southern Miss in the opening game of the series and the first for the school since Hunter Riggins did it against Louisiana on March 5, 2022.
Wilks, who had a good game against the Lions earlier this season, homered in all three games at Troy with two of the long balls giving the Golden Eagles the lead with the other one extending their lead. The program tied a season-high for hits (15) in the series finale and did not commit an error in the series.
Southern Miss sophomore righthander Will Armistead looks to make his first Golden Eagle start against the Lions. He has not posted a record and has a 5.40 ERA in three relief appearances this season. His longest appearance was a two-inning performance in the second game of the Georgia Southern (3/25) twinbill in which he gave up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
Offensively Dustin Dickerson has hit safely in the last seven games for Southern Miss, while Wilks has hit safely in six contests.
The ODU series gets underway with a 5 p.m., first pitch Thursday from Norfolk, Va.
