HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) fired a first-round 70, while graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) collected a 71 to lead Southern Miss to a third-place team showing following the first 18 holes of the Sun Belt Conference Championship, Monday, at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Miss.
The Golden Eagles posted a one-over 289 at the par 72, 7,190-yard course and find themselves just five strokes behind leader Troy, who opened the event with a 284. Louisiana enjoys a one-stroke lead over Southern Miss with a 288 for second place, while both Texas State and South Alabama are tied for fourth at 291 and No. 26 ranked Georgia Southern is in sixth at 293.
"I am proud of our team and the start to this championship," said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. "Annandale is a tough approach shot course where you must think your way around things. Shot selection, landing yardage, wind direction, etc., are all amplified because of the fast, firm greens we are hitting into. Our guys did a good job of staying patient, disciplined, and aggressive where they needed."
In the individual competition, Latter holds down a fourth-place tie, just three strokes off the lead, while Clarke holds a spot tied for No. 6.
Both sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) and Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) added 74s for the Golden Eagles over the first 18 holes while Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) carded a 75 to round out the individual scoring.
Round two takes place starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Fans can watch the live action on ESPN+ by clicking here or by following the live scoring by clicking here.
