Men's Tennis' Doubles Success Not Enough in Weekend Matches

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (6-12, 2-5 Sun Belt) men's tennis team dropped matches to No. 62 Old Dominion (12-9, 4-1 Sun Belt) and James Madison (10-8, 2-4 Sun Belt) this weekend at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. Despite the losses, the Golden Eagles took both doubles points in dominating fashion.
"We're on the cusp of getting that big Sun Belt win," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I was pleased how we played in doubles, and it set us up for two opportunities to have a strong showing in singles play. Both matches could have swung either way with a couple games coming down to the third set."
Antoine Audrain and Saheb Sodhi got the weekend started with a 6-2 win on court three in Saturday's match against the Monarchs. With matches on court one and two coming down to the wire to decide the winner, Alan Sanson and Alexander Gima -- who were recognized on Senior Day along with Audrain -- outlasted Francois Le Tallec and Cosme Rolland De Ravel, 6-4. The win gave Southern Miss an early 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
That advantaged didn't last long as Old Dominion quickly got wins over Audrain, Shamirul Shahril, Dakotah Bobo and Olimjon Nabiev in straight sets. Sanson was the only Golden Eagle to force a third set after he won the second set 7-6 (7-0). He had previously dropped the first set, 4-6, before also dropping the third set via a 10-7 score.
Southern Miss got off to another fast start in doubles play on Sunday against James Madison, ultimately winning the point for the second consecutive day. Bobo and Shahril got their first doubles win of the weekend with a 6-2 drubbing of Francisco Sinopoli and Holden Koons on court one. The Golden Eagles then clinched the doubles point with another win from Audrain and Sodhi on court three.
With the Golden Eagles winless in singles play for the weekend, Gima finally picked up a win when he took down Aathreya Mahesh in straight sets. Gima won 7-5, 6-3 on court six. Shahril and Sodhi both fell in three sets, while the remaining Golden Eagles fell in straight sets.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday, April 8, as it hosts Louisiana at 2 p.m. in their home finale. Admission to the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is free.
