Men's Tennis Stuns Louisiana for First Sun Belt Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss (7-12, 1-4 Sun Belt) men's tennis team picked up its first Sun Belt win in program history on Sunday afternoon as it knocked off Louisiana (11-8, 4-2 Sun Belt). The win came via a 6-1 drubbing over the Ragin' Cajuns as the Golden Eagles closed out its home slate of matches at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
"I'm very proud of the way we fought today because Louisiana is one of the top-end teams in the Sun Belt Conference," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "From top to bottom we played some of the best tennis I've seen us play all year. It will be key to keep that momentum going as we hit the road and then go to the conference tournament."
Southern Miss got off to a fast start as Alexander Gima and Alan Sanson cruised to a 6-3 win over Kacper Dworak and Alejo Ferrer Chueca. Saheb Sodhi and Antoine Audrain then secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win against Calin Postea and William Ribero. Shamirul Shahril and Dakotah Bobo fell 6-4 at the top spot.
Bobo got revenge in singles as he beat Karlo Kajin in straight sets on court one. Sanson and Nabiev added two more wins in straight sets on courts three and four, respectively. On court six, Audrain won a close first set, 7-5, before blowing past Grant Ladnreth for a 6-2 win in the second set. Sodhi went the distance with Dworak on court five after winning 6-4, 3-6, 11-9. Shahril dropped a two-setter to Ferrer Chueca on court two.
Nabiev picked up his team-leading ninth win of the season, while Audrain improved to 7-4. Sanson and Gima moved to 7-3 in doubles play together and Sodhi and Audrain won their third-straight as a paring.
The Golden Eagles will now close the regular season with matches at Georgia Southern (April 15) and Georgia State (April 16). Both matches are slated for 9 a.m. CST.
