Men’s Tennis Drops Tight Road Match at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Southern Miss (7-9, 1-3 SBC) came away with the doubles point Sunday morning, but Troy (16-4, 5-0 SBC) answered with four singles wins to take a 4-2 decision at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. Southern Miss entered the match at 7-8 overall and 1-2 in Sun Belt play, while Troy came in unbeaten in conference action and added to that mark with the win.
The Golden Eagles opened the day well in doubles. Julius Bult and Eric Perkowski gave Southern Miss an early push with a 6-2 win over Yeray Andres Pastor and Steph Tavares Noale at No. 3 doubles, and Jose Murariu and Saheb Sodhi followed with a 6-3 victory against Henrique de Brito and Thiago Drozdowski on court one to secure the opening point. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with Kale Mize and Jay Temming holding a 5-4 lead.
Troy answered quickly in singles play, taking courts three and four in straight sets. Yeray Andres Pastor defeated Sodhi, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, and Hiiro Sakamoto followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bult at No. 4 to swing the match in the home team's favor. Troy then moved within one point of the team win when Ausias Martin Melo defeated Mize, 7-5, 6-1, on court one.
Southern Miss stayed alive behind Murariu at No. 2 singles. After dropping the opening set 6-2, Murariu responded with a strong finish and defeated Luciano Alcocer, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, to pull the Golden Eagles back within 3-2.
The clinching point came on court five, where Steph Tavares Noale outlasted Olle Noltorp in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Ritabrata Sarkar's match at No. 6 was left unfinished. The official order of finish in singles was 3, 4, 1, 2, 5.
Southern Miss returns to action on April 4 with a road match at North Alabama.
