RUSTON, La. – Jorge Corona collected an RBI double and a solo home run to lead Louisiana Tech to a 3-1 non-conference victory over No. 24 Southern Miss 3-1 Tuesday Night at J.C. Love Field.
The Golden Eagles (22-13) saw a three-game winning streak snapped, while the Bulldogs improved to 20-18.
The Bulldogs struck first in the fourth as Brody Drost opened the frame with a single to right. Drost scored one batter later when Corona doubled deep into the left-center gap. Reliever Colby Allen, though, retired the next three hitters to avert any more trouble.
Southern Miss tied the score in the next frame. Rodrigo Montenegro opened the inning with a single to left. Nick Monistere then reached on a fielder's choice that erased Montenegro at second, before a Carson Paetow single pushed Monistere to third. Matthew Etzel then followed with a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game.
Walker Burchfield then put the home squad ahead for good in the fifth with a leadoff homer to left for his fourth long ball of the year and Corona gave LA Tech an insurance run with a blast to right, his eight, for the final run of the game.
Reed Smith pitched five innings for the Bulldogs and allowed a run on three hits with two walks and a strikeout to garner the victory and improve to 2-3. Landon Tomkins threw the final 1 2/3 innings for LA Tech and picked up his third save.
Golden Eagle reliever Isaiah Rhodes, the third of five Golden Eagle hurlers suffered the loss giving up the go-ahead homer in the fifth. He gave up two hits and fanned one to fall to 1-2 on the year.
Will Armistead, who got the start for Southern Miss, threw three shutout frames and allowed two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in a no decision.
The two teams will conclude their season series in Hattiesburg next Wednesday, April 26, at Pete Taylor Park in a 6 p.m., contest.
The Golden Eagles travel again this weekend to face Sun Belt first-place foe Coastal Carolina. The series starts Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
