HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns home for its final non-conference weekend as they play host to Valparaiso in a three-game game set starting Friday with a 6 p.m., contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (8-4) enter the weekend having won three of the last four games and Saturday's game will serve as the school's annual Parrothead Day theme.
The Beacons head to Hattiesburg with a 6-4 record, after dropping at 12-2 decision at Mississippi State Tuesday evening. This will be the third meeting between the two schools and the first in Hattiesburg, with the Golden Eagles winning both contests. The two previous meetings took place at the Lake Area Classic in Lake Charles, La., in 2020 and hosted by McNeese State.
In the first meeting between the two schools, four Golden Eagle pitchers combined on a two-hitter, with Tyler Spring throwing four scoreless, hitless innings with six strikeouts to earn the win in relief. The Golden Eagles pounded out 10 hits, including a two-run homer from Danny Lynch. The second game proved to be more of an offensive showdown with the Golden Eagles holding off the Beacons 13-11. Matt Guidry homered twice and drove in four runs, while Lynch drove in three to lead Southern Miss. Former hurler, Ben Ethridge, gave up two runs over six innings to get the victory.
Currently, junior designated hitter Slade Wilks leads the way for the Golden Eagle offense as he is hitting .405 with five doubles, two home runs and five RBI. Junior shortstop Dustin Dickerson follows with a .372 average with five doubles, a triple and five RBI while junior center fielder Matthew Etzel is at .291 with three doubles, a triple and nine RBI, to go along with a team best six stolen bases.
For the fourth-straight weekend, Southern Miss expects to utilize the same rotation with preseason All-American Tanner Hall (2-1, 3.94 ERA) getting the call Friday, Matt Adams (1-0, 2.20 ERA) going on Saturday and Niko Mazza (2-1, 2.25 ERA) set to be on the bump for Sunday's tilt.
Following the three-game homestand, the Golden Eagles take to the road for the next five games, beginning Tuesday evening at Southeastern Louisiana, before heading to Texas State for its first-ever Sun Belt Conference series. They end this stretch at New Orleans, Tuesday, March 21. It also starts a string of 13 of 17 games away from Pete Taylor Park. Southern Miss does not play at home during the midweek again until April 4 versus SLU.
