HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team looks to snap a three-game losing streak when they play host to Georgia Southern for its first ever Sun Belt Conference home series this weekend at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Â
Due to expected bad weather over the weekend, Southern Miss has altered the schedule with Georgia Southern and will now play at 4 p.m., for the opener on Friday, before completing the series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. There will now not be a game on Sunday.
Â
All three games are available to watch through ESPN+ and can also be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Â
Southern Miss comes home this weekend after recently completing a five-game road swing in which they went 2-3 on the trip. While the Golden Eagles return home this weekend, they are still in the midst of playing 13 of 17 games away from their home park. After this weekend, they play the next four contests away from Hattiesburg.
Â
Georgia Southern comes to Hattiesburg holding an 11-10 record, after winning their midweek contest 12-11 at Mercer Wednesday night. Georgia Southern, which played host to the Statesboro Regional last spring and finished the 2022 campaign with a 41-20 record, make their second trip to Pete Taylor Park, having also played here for a three-game set during the 2018 season. Overall, the Golden Eagles leads the series 4-0.
Â
Southern Miss swept the Eagles in their first trip to Pete Taylor Park, which included a pair of walk-off victories. Hunter Slater's opposite-field single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning allowed the Golden Eagles to take a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern in the opener. Due to weather, the Golden Eagles played a doubleheader the next day and Matt Wallner blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the 3-2 game winner in the opener. In the finale, Slater's two-run home run and RBI-doubles by Wallner and Luke Reynolds keyed a four-run, fifth inning that fortified a 8-2 victory to complete the series sweep.
Â
In their last contest, New Orleans registered a pair of two-run home runs to defeat Southern Miss, 6-3, Tuesday night at Maestri Field. The loss suffered was the third in a row for the Golden Eagles (12-8), as they had a five-game winning streak snapped against the Privateers. Billy Oldham gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits, including two-run homers in the fourth and fifth innings, and two walks with six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
