Women's Golf Claims Second Place at Tchefuncta Invitational

COVINGTON, La. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team took home second place at the Tchefuncta Invitational at Tchefuncta Country Club in Covington, La. Momoka Ando and Elena Melich both finished inside the top-five on the individual leaderboard to lead the Golden Eagles this week.

"It's great any time you can take home a trophy, but we did too many good things during the 36-hole round yesterday to be truly satisfied with our finish," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "But again, anytime you have 4-5 players inside the top-10, you know good things are bound to happen. We've got a quick turnaround before we compete again and there is a lot to take from this week so I'm excited to see how they respond next time out."

The Golden Eagles held a 12-stroke lead heading into the final round on Tuesday morning, but South Alabama stormed back to take the team championship by two strokes. Ando fired a six-over 77 this morning to finish in fourth place. Melich finished right behind her fellow Golden Eagle in fifth, while also shooting a 77.

Playing as an individual, Taylor Trible shot a one-under 70 to finish in a tie for 9^th. Trible's 70 tied her career low and her finish in the leaderboard was the best of her career. Freshman Fernanda Gorostiaga also had a career tournament, finishing in a tie for 9^th with Trible, Jacee Fields and Georgia State's Katja Mueller. The freshman fired a one-over 72 during her final round. Fields shot a seven-over 78 today to drop into a 9^th place.

Merche Corbacho finished in a tie for 38^th after a 10-over 81 today. The individual winner was Toledo's Yedam Lee, who shot a pair of three-under 68's. Lee ended her final round with a one-over 72 to win the tournament by five strokes.

Southern Miss will regroup before it heads to Fort Worth, Texas on March 6-7 for the Trinity Forest Invitational. The two-day event hosted by SMU will be played at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
