DALLAS, Texas -- Elena Melich finished tied for 35th to lead the Southern Miss women's golf team at the Trinity Forest Invitational. The Golden Eagles finished 14th in the 15-team field at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.
"This event was a huge opportunity for us to measure up on a big course and big field," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "While we struggled overall to handle the pressure, this is where we want to be. We've got another big test next week, but we are more than prepared to face whatever lies ahead now."
Melich was the only Southern Miss golfer to shoot par this week, firing an even-par 72 today. Melich cashed in on three birdies today to go along with a one-over 73 and a two-over 74 yesterday. Momoka Ando carded a three-over 75 today to finish in 56th. Taylor Trible (75-76-76-227) finished in 62nd and Jacee Fields (77-77-78-232) ended her week in a tie for 75th. Fernanda Gorostiaga, who finished tied for 78th, saved her best round for last as the freshman fired a four-over 76 today.
Alma Betoret finished in 66th playing as an individual. The freshman ended her stay in Dallas with a four-over 76 that featured two birdies and 11 pars. Melich and Gorostiaga each finished with a team-high eight birdies, while Melich also recorded an eagle.
Southern Miss will go back to work on March 17-19 in Tucson, Ariz. at the Mountain View Collegiate. The three-day event will segway the Golden Eagles into the Warhawk Invitational in early April before the Sun Belt Tournament at LPGA International starting April 16.
