HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss (4-4, 0-0 SBC) men's tennis team is headed to Louisiana for a weekend of matches at LSU (5-1, 0-0 SEC) and Nicholls (2-4, 0-0 Southland). The Golden Eagles will play LSU at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then the Colonels at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Thibodeaux.
"Saturday is a great opportunity to see how we match up against an elite program in LSU," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We are coming off a good win against Prairie View A&M last week and we have been playing well in doubles.
"If we can keep it up in doubles play and then get a few timely wins in singles, then it should be a good weekend."
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 7-0 shelling over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday morning. Olimjon Nabiev moved to 7-1 after beating Lamar's Joan Crespo on Monday. Nabiev then picked up a doubles win with Antoine Audrain on Tuesday against Prairie View A&M, cruising to a 6-2 win over Jaydn Boone and Caleb Eaton. Dakotah Bobo and Alan Sanson picked up singles win against Lamar, but Filippi Salsini came from behind against Shamirul Shahril to clinch the match for Lamar. The Cardinals took the doubles point with wins on court one and three.
LSU is 5-1 with wins over Rice, Prairie View A&M, Tulane and Lamar. The Tigers' lone loss was to then-No. 15 Georgia. Nicholls heads into Sunday at 4-4 with wins over Loyola New Orleans, Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State.
