THIBODAUX, La. -- Shamirul Shahril and Dakotah Bobo did the improbable on Saturday afternoon at No. 30 LSU (6-1, 0-0 SEC) when Southern Miss' (5-5, 0-0 SBC) top doubles pair took down Stefan Latinovic and Nick Watson, who are ranked as the No. 24 doubles team in the country. Despite the win, LSU still took the team match, 7-0. At Nicholls (4-5, 0-0 Southland) on Sunday afternoon, the Golden Eagles bounced back to take a 6-1 win in Thibodaux, La.
"What a win for Dakotah [Bobo] and Shamirul [Shahril] against the No. 24 doubles team in the country at LSU," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "I am proud of the way they fought all match. We almost won on court three against another great doubles team. Overall, we lost the match, but I liked the things I saw from our guys today.
"We were able to respond at Nicholls and get a win against another quality opponent. We'll now have a few days before playing Jackson State back in Hattiesburg. It's our last home match for a few weeks, so I'm hoping we will have a good crowd for it."
After the Tigers took down Alan Sanson and Alexander Gima on court two to take the first doubles match, Bobo and Shahril won 6-4 to set up a deciding match on court three with Saheb Sodhi and Olimjon Nabiev getting the call. The two Golden Eagles took George Stoupe and Julien Penzlin to the wire, but ultimately fell 7-5 after fending off a flurry of match points.
LSU went on to take all six singles matches, but Southern Miss didn't go down without a fight. Shahril went up early on Chen Dong with a 6-4 win in the first set. Dong, though, came back to take the second set via a 6-4 score and then the third set with a 10-6 win. Both Nabiev and Sanson took their opponents to a tiebreak in the second set before bowing out. Pawin Jirapoomdaje, Bobo and Sodhi all fell in straight sets.
Southern Miss then made the short drive to Thibadaux on Sunday afternoon to take on the Colonels. The Golden Eagles made quick work of the Southland Conference member and cruised to their fifth win of the season. Gima and Sanson opened doubles play with a 6-3 win on court two, then Bobo and Shahril secured the doubles point for Southern Miss with a 6-4 win -- their second win at the top spot in as many days.
Shahril, Nabiev, Sanson, Sodhi, and Gima all grabbed singles wins to help the Golden Eagles make quick work on Nicholls. Omar Morsy knocked off Bobo at the top singles spot in three sets. Bobo won the first set in a tiebreaker before Morsy took the final two sets. Nabiev's win on court three gave the Uzbekistan native his team-leading seventh win of the season. He moves to 5-1 on court three. Sanson's win was his fourth of the year, which is tied for Bobo and Jirapoomdaje for second-most. Gima and Sanson moved their doubles record to 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Southern Miss will return to action on Thursday, March 2, as it hosts Jackson State at 2 p.m. The contest is a rescheduled date from Jan. 21. Admission to the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is free.
