HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Women's basketball closes the 2022-23 season in Lafayette, La. against Louisiana. Tipoff from the Cajundome is set for 5 p.m.
Last Time Out
Southern Miss (19-9, 12-5 Sun Belt) grabbed an 88-79 victory over Troy to sweep the regular season against the Trojans. Southern Miss is now 5-0 all-time against Troy.
Melyia Grayson laid in 23 points and grabbed eight boards, which along with Domonique Davis' 19 points and nine boards and Lani Cornfield's 16 points proved enough of a driver to lead the Lady Eagles over Troy.
The Trojans attempted 83 field goals and connected on 29 of them, a 34.9 percent performance. Most impressive for the Lady Eagles, Southern Miss out-rebounded Troy, the nation's best team at cleaning the glass, 47-46.
Noting the Lady Eagles
Southern Miss is looking to win its 20th game of the season for the first time since 2016-17 when the Lady Eagles finished 23-11 on the year. That team also tied a school-record 13 conference wins, which the Lady Eagles have a chance at tying for the fourth time in school history at Louisiana.
The Lady Eagles have scored 80+ points in back-to-back games for the first time since 2015-16, proving the squad is coming into form at the best time of year.
Still, the Lady Eagles only allow 60.1 points per game, the fourth-best mark in the Sun Belt.
The Lady Eagles need a win over the Cajuns to secure a top-four seed at the Sun Belt Tournament in order to receive a double-bye through the first two rounds.
The Louisiana Series
Southern Miss is 14-3 all-time against Louisiana, winning the last nine games and 11 of the last 12. The Lady Eagles took the first game against Louisiana this year by a one-point margin in a 44-43 win at Reed Green Coliseum.
The two squads began play in 1976 as Southern Miss took the first of its 14 wins in Reed Green Coliseum.
In Lafayette, things are closer as Southern Miss holds a 3-2 advantage under the Cajundome. The Lady Eagles last travelled to Lafayette in 1999.
