HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- After a pair of cancellations, the Southern Miss (1-1, 0-0 SBC) men's tennis team will make its long-awaited return to the courts this weekend at the Louisiana Winter Classic in Lafayette, La. The two-day event features six schools.
"We are excited to get back out and compete this weekend," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "We've been working on the small details in practice after the two cancellations, but that should translate to the matches this weekend. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and Texas Rio Grande Valley are two quality programs and should give us a good test."
Southern Miss will be joined in Lafayette by Louisiana, UTRGV, Tyler Junior College, Nicholls and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Golden Eagles start the tournament against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Friday at 9 a.m. Matches will take place at the Cajun Courts or Bourgeois Hall Courts. Engineer's team will then batt Texas Rio Grande Valley on Saturday at 9 a.m. That match will take place at the Cajun Courts.
Southern Miss opened the season in Fort Myers, Fla. last week and returned to Hattiesburg with a win over Bucknell under its belt. Prior to the win over the Bison, the Golden Eagles dropped the season opener to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday. Dakotah Bobo, Olimjon Nabiev, Saheb Sodhi and Pawin Jirapoomdaje each recorded singles wins in the Bucknell victory. Bobo and Sodhi's wins were the first of their Southern Miss career.
The Islanders are 2-0 with a pair of wins over Prairie View A&M on Jan. 19. Former Golden Eagle Mattieu Peres has a team-high two wins at the No. 3 spot for Corpus Christi. Nathan Schwartz is also 2-0 for the Islanders on court four. Texas Rio Grande Valley is 3-4 with wins over Oral Roberts, St. Mary's and Texas - Tyler. The Vaqueros are on a two-match skid with losses to Lamar and SMU.
