HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's tennis (7-7, 1-1 SBC) returns to Sun Belt play on Sunday when the Golden Eagles travel to Mobile to face South Alabama (5-8, 2-2 SBC). First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Southern Miss heads back into conference action after a three-match swing in San Antonio. The Golden Eagles opened that trip with a 4-2 win over UIW before dropping to UTSA and Texas A&M Corpus Christi, bringing them into the weekend at 7-7 overall. In the win over UIW, Southern Miss rallied after losing the doubles point and got singles victories from Saheb Sodhi, Eric Perkowski, Olle Noltorp and Jay Temming to secure the team result.
Sunday's match gives Southern Miss a chance to build on its start in league play. The Golden Eagles are 1-1 in the Sun Belt entering the weekend, while South Alabama sits at 2-2, making the matchup an important one early in the conference race.
There is also some recent history in the matchup. Southern Miss went to Mobile last season and earned a 4-3 comeback win over the Jaguars after falling behind 3-1. That result marked a key road win for the Golden Eagles in conference play, and Southern Miss will look to carry some of that momentum back into Mobile on Sunday.
South Alabama enters the match after a 4-0 loss to Samford on Friday, but the Jaguars have been competitive throughout league play and will be back on their home courts Sunday afternoon. For Southern Miss, the match is the start of another important stretch away from Hattiesburg as the Golden Eagles continue to push through the heart of the conference schedule.
After Sunday's match, Southern Miss remains on the road next weekend for a conference matchup at Troy on March 28.
