Men’s Tennis Falls at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. – Southern Miss men's tennis (7-8, 1-2 SBC) dropped a 4-0 decision to South Alabama (6-8, 3-2 SBC) on Sunday afternoon in Mobile. The loss came in the Golden Eagles' return to Sun Belt play after a three-match swing in San Antonio.
South Alabama took the early lead by securing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Javier Accossatto and Albert Bouyacoub defeated Saheb Sodhi and Eric Perkowski, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles, while Nikola Frumholz and Alex Radjenovic added a 6-1 win over Olle Noltorp and Matei Varbanciu on court three. The No. 1 doubles match between South Alabama's Jack Hanning and Martin Yigin and Southern Miss' Kale Mize and Julius Bult was left unfinished at 5-5.
The Jaguars then closed out the match with singles wins on courts five, one and two. Martin Yigin opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Noltorp at No. 5 to make it 2-0. South Alabama stretched the lead on court one, where Accossatto took the opening set from Mize in a tiebreak, 7-6 (8-6), before the match was awarded to the Jaguars by retirement in the second set because of injury. The clinching point came at No. 2 singles, where Hanning outlasted Jose Murariu, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Southern Miss had three additional singles matches left unfinished when the contest ended. Saheb Sodhi had split the opening two sets on court three, Julius Bult had forced a third set at No. 4 and Ritabrata Sarkar was also in a third set battle on court six when play was stopped.
The Golden Eagles will continue conference play next weekend with a road match at Troy.
