Men's Tennis Splits Weekend in Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Southern Miss (2-2, 0-0 SBC) men's tennis team ended its weekend in Lafayette on a high note as it defeated UT Rio Grande Valley (3-5, 0-0 WAC) by a point on Saturday. The Golden Eagles, though, dropped a 5-2 decision to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (3-1, 0-0 Southland) on Friday.

"I was proud of the way the guys fought back on Saturday after a tough match against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "Olimjon [Nabiev] was steady for us all weekend, pickup up two wins.

"Now we'll regroup and prepare to play two matches in Hattiesburg next weekend. We are excited to get back in front of our fans."

Olimjon Nabiev picked up a pair of wins as he defeated Nathan Schwartz and Karlo Krolo. Nabiev took Schwartz in straight sets, including a 7-3 tiebreaker in the first set. He then overcame a first-set loss to Krolo on Saturday to win the final two sets, 6-4, 6-0.

Nabiev was the only Southern Miss individual to win on Friday, but it did grab two doubles wins over the Islanders. Saheb Sodhi and Dakotah Bobo won 6-4, while Alexander Gima and Alan Sanson won with the same score. Pawin Jirapoomdaje and Bobo each lost their single matches in three sets.

Alan Sanson, Taras Ignatiuk and Nabiev all won in singles play during Southern Miss' 4-3 win over UTRGV. Sanson won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, and Ignatiuk won his match, 6-2, 6-3. It was the first win of the season for both Sanson and Ignatiuk. Alexander Gima, Pasawee Reansuwong and Bobo all lost in straight sets.

In doubles play, Sanson and Gima picked up a 6-2 win over Borna Devald and Sam Whitehead. On court three, Antoine Audrain and Nabiev won 6-3 against Agustin Salazar and Chris Lawrence.

Southern Miss returns home to host Samford on Saturday, Feb. 2. First serve at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is set for 2 p.m.
