HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team opens its 2023 season Friday when they play host to Liberty for a three-game weekend series at Pete Taylor Park.
Game times are 4 p.m., for both Friday and Saturday, with an 11:30 a.m. start time Sunday. All three games can be seen via ESPN+ as well as be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles are fresh off a 47-19 season a year ago that saw them win a regular season championship in their final year in Conference USA. The squad went on to play host and win a regional before bowing out in the Hattiesburg Super Regional in two games.
Seven position players return from last year's squad, including seniors Danny Lynch (.286, 5 HR, 30 RBI) at third base, Christopher Sargent (.269, 21 HR, 58 RBI) at first base, Blake Johnson (.269, 3 HR, 23 RBI) at catcher and Reece Ewing (.260, 10 HR, 34 RBI) in left field. Junior Dustin Dickerson (.320, 24 2B, 32 RBI) also returns at shortstop, along with junior designated hitter Slade Wilks (.288, 10 HR, 37 RBI) and sophomore Carson Paetow (.271, 16 HR, 48 RBI) in right field.
The Golden Eagles also welcome junior outfielder transfer Matthew Etzel, who comes to Southern Miss from Panola College in Texas and was listed as the No. 1 top impact junior college transfer by D1Baseball.com. Another outfielder, junior Tate Parker from Pearl River CC, also comes to Southern Miss on that D1Baseball list at the No. 40. Infielder Gabe Lacy, from Gulfport, transferred from Tennessee Tech and could see action at second base.
On the mound, the Golden Eagles lost 12 pitchers from last year's team that recorded a school-record 746 strikeouts. They do return preseason All-America product Tanner Hall, who will get the nod in the season opener after finishing with a 9-3 record and a 2.81 ERA a season ago. Hall also fanned 146 and walked just 14 in 109 innings.
Also back is junior Justin Storm (3-0, 4.30 ERA), Isaiah Rhodes (3-0, 4.15 ERA), Matt Adams (2-2, 6.56) and Niko Mazza (0-0, 5.06 ERA). Both Adams and Mazza are expected to start Saturday and Sunday, respectively, for the Golden Eagles this weekend.
One other pitcher, Chandler Best, returns but will miss the season with an injury.
Eleven of the 18 Golden Eagle newcomers could see time on the mound this spring including Billy Oldham, Holland Townes, Chandler Dawson, JB Middleton and Will Armistead, just to name a few.
Liberty comes to Hattiesburg after finishing 37-23 in the ASUN last season and earning a spot in the NCAA Gainesville Regional. Their opening day starter, left-hander Garrett Horn earned ASUN preseason Pitcher of the Year after enjoying a 6-1 record with a 1.93 ERA a season ago.
Following the Liberty series, the Golden Eagles remain at home Tuesday when they welcome New Orleans to Pete Taylor Park. Game time is 6 p.m.
