LAFAYETTE, LA.-- The Southern Miss women's tennis team had an outstanding closing to their fall season at the Ragin Cajun Invitational hosted by Louisiana Friday and Saturday, accumulating five titles and winning ten matches on opening day, followed by eight more on day two.
"Fantastic effort from the Golden Eagles to clinch five titles in our final fall competition, said Coach Piyanart Engineer. "Congratulations to Junior Alyssa Richter for winning her first individual singles title. I am proud of our doubles teams for stepping up and winning two titles against strong competition from Tulane and ULM. Gabriella and Zenn both won their individual consolation finals. Suhana fought hard in her finals and lost in a close 3rd set tiebreaker. Overall, this tournament showed that we can compete against anyone. It comes down to who can maintain composure, focus, and execute when the match is on the line."
The Black and Gold competed against several opponents, including ULM, Arkansas State, McNeese, Sam Houston State, and Tulane.
In the consolation doubles of flight one, the doubles pair of returners Suhana Das and Zenn Lim defeated Yelamanchil and Borland of Tulane 6-2, followed by another Golden Eagle feat in flight two of the main draw with newcomers Angelina Blinova and Malannia Vashkevich with a 6-4 win over ULM opponents Del Campo and Bachmann.
The flight three main draw saw the pair of Alyssa Richter and Gabriella Danielsson defeat Margolin and Brody of Arkansas State, 6-1, and then Zhu and Mullen of Tulane, 6-3.
Richter had an outstanding day in singles play in the flight two main draw, defeating Borland of Tulane in three sets with scores of 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
Lim and Danielsson also found wins in their consolation finals over Arkansas State opponents.
The Black and Gold closed out their fall season and look ahead to their spring schedule that will be released within the upcoming week.
