Women's Tennis Splits Opening Weekend After Win Over Southeastern Louisiana

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) women's tennis team cruised to a 5-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex. The win erased a 4-0 season-opening loss to Florida A&M on Saturday.

"I was proud of the way we fought back on Sunday after a tough loss against Florida A&M," said head coach Piyanart Engineer. "We had strong doubles play from Alyssa (Richter) and Hannah (Chambers) in both matches, but I also thought some of them stepped up big-time on Sunday against a good Southeastern Louisiana team."

Alyssa Richter and Hannah Chambers picked up a doubles win against the Rattlers, beating Sierra Sandy and Veronica Rodriguez, 6-1. Florida A&M went on to win the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Angelina Blinova and Malannia Vashkevic on court two. Southern Miss was forced to had the Rattlers a point on court three due to a forfeit. Florida A&M swept a pair of singles matches on court four and five, then picked up the deciding point on court six with a default win.

Zenn Lim and Suhana Das opened Sunday with a 6-1 win over Taisia Bolsova and Panatchakorn Suanarsa on court two. Richter and Chambers continued to dominate in doubles play, winning 6-4 on court one over Southeastern Louisiana's Bente Bierma and Leana Gomez to secure the doubles point. The Lions evened the score at one-all after Lim was forced to retire in singles play, but Blinova quickly made up for it with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court five. Vashkevic then put Southern Miss in the drivers seat with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court six over Suanarsa.

Up 3-1 in the scorebook, Chambers locked in Southern Miss' first win of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on court three. Richter added another point for the Golden Eagles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win at the top singles spot.
