LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) wasted no time against Akron as the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead within the first 90 seconds of play. The Zips closed the gap to six, but were never able to top that as Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) and Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) combined for 47 of Southern Miss' 77 points.
Sieper became the sixth Lady Eagle in program history to make at least seven three pointers in a single game—most impressive as the performance was just her second-ever on the collegiate stage. Southern Miss continued to outrun, outshoot and out-rebound Akron, leading by as many as 25 late in the third quarter. Akron was able to make up some ground once the Lady Eagle starters left the game for good in the fourth, but Southern Miss prevailed 77-60 in the inaugural MAC-SBC Challenge.
STORYLINES
Morgan Sieper has revolutionized the Lady Eagles' offensive attack. The true freshman is ranked first in the country in three-pointers per game (5.0), 14th in three-point percentage (66.7) and 16th in three-pointers made (10). Her sharpshooting abilities have helped the Lady Eagles to a 47.4 three-point percentage—the second-best mark in the nation.
Domonique Davis continues to move up the charts. Against Akron, she moved to 1,004 career points at Southern Miss, becoming the 30th Lady Eagle to do so. Just 11 points stand between her and 29th and only 26 points for her to break into the top 25.
Southern Miss meets North Alabama exactly one year after last season's 72-67 Lady Eagle win. Southern Miss only had eight players available and squeaked out the victory over the Lions, who put up 37 shots from behind the arc.
Nov. 18, 2023, also marks the 43rd anniversary of Joye Lee-McNelis' first career game and start at Southern Miss. On Nov. 18, 1980, the Lady Golden Eagles traveled to Columbus, Miss., and escaped with an 82-80 overtime victory over the Owls from the Mississippi University for Women.
SCOUTING NORTH ALABAMA
North Alabama (1-2, 0-0 Atlantic Sun) enters the weekend 1-2 and on a two-game skid after falling to Denver 67-51 and at Missouri 83-72. The Lions truly live and die by the three as they have put up 79 shots from behind the arc in three games and hold a 32.9 three-point percentage from that range.
The Lions' lone win on the year came in the season-opener against Tennessee Southern and the team shot 13-of-27 from three to win 90-47. Against Denver and Missouri, North Alabama finished 2-of-18 and 11-of-34 from deep, falling in those games 67-51 and 83-72, respectively.
A new starter entered the Lions' lineup at Mizzou as Emily Jones made her first start of the year against the Tigers. Two Lions, Alexis Callins and Alyssa Clutter, average double-figure scoring with 10.7 and 10.0 points per game, respectively. Clutter also shoots 55.6 percent from the floor—the best among the Lion starters.
Off the bench, UNA has multiple options capable of scoring with Chole Siegel (8.5), Sara Wohlgemuth (6.7), Olivia Jones (5.7) and Emma Kate Tittle (5.7). Wohlgemuth also averages 6.7 assists per game after dishing out 10 against Missouri. The senior's season low is four helpers.
SERIES HISTORY
Southern Miss and North Alabama first met as in a home-and-home agreement in 1976-77 with the Lady Eagles winning in Hattiesburg and Florence. The two did not meet again until 2019, when North Alabama notched its first win of the series in a 69-65 overtime win to eliminate the Lady Eagles from the WBI.
Last season, Southern Miss won 72-67 in a track meet at Reed Green Coliseum to take a 3-1 series advantage. Southern Miss is 1-1 against North Alabama under McNelis and the two have never met on a Saturday.
