Lady Eagles Remain Undefeated, Pass 90 Points for the First Time Since 2017

FLORENCE, Ala. – Southern Miss tops 90 points for the first time since Dec. 30, 2017, in a 91-63 win over North Alabama. Six Lady Eagles finished with double figures, the most since five did so against Coastal Carolina last season.
"That was a lot of fun," said Lady Eagles assistant coach Jessica Barber. "It was my scout, but Coach McNelis was a wizard calling offense tonight. When we're able to bring kids in like Nyla Jean off the bench, we can have success like this. Our quote today was if you can't do great things, do small things great. At halftime, Nyla Jean—one of the smallest kids on our team—had nine rebounds and she probably had the toughest assignment on defense with having to stop their point guard on offense."
Southern Miss (3-0) is undefeated through three games for the first time since 2017-18—that squad's undefeated streak lasted through six games.
Nyla Jean (Tampa, Fla.) registered her first career double-double with a 13-point, 10-rebound performance. The Georgia State transfer finished 5-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-3 from behind the line. Jean, combined with Mahoganie Williams' (Monroe, La.) 14 points, helped the Lady Eagles in relief off the bench.
"Nyla is a humble servant kid. She goes in with her best, whether off the bench or as a starter," said Barber on Jean's abilities. "She is one of the x-factors to the program."
The Lady Eagles starters, though, did not need much help. Four starters finished in double-figures led by Domonique Davis' (DeRidder, La.) team-best 18. Davis now has 1,022 points at Southern Miss and moved to 28th all-time on the Lady Eagles career point charts.
Throughout the game, Southern Miss' defense suffocated North Alabama (1-3), holding the scoreless from long range for their first 16 long balls of the game. The Lions managed to shoot 34.8 percent on the day but shot an abysmal 22.6 in the first half.
