9/7/2022 3:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HATTIESBURG, Miss.— The Southern Miss women's soccer team plays in state SEC opponent, the Mississippi State Bulldogs, at home Thursday at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex at 4 p.m.
"The team showed great progress in Sunday's match. Watching the soccer, we played for roughly 60 minutes, was fun. Every game is bringing us that much closer to our goals. We learn and tweak the things we need to work on while growing closer together. We'll be ready for conference," said Assistant Coach Hayley Knowles.
Last Time on the Pitch:
The Black and Gold lost 3-1 against the LSU Tigers Sunday, Sept. 5. There was no goal action in the first period, but the Tigers broke into the scoring column at 51:40.
Golden Eagle midfielder Ilana Izquierdo managed to find the equalizer moments later with their first and only goal of the match.
The Tigers responded with back-to-back goals in the second half, concluding the scoring for the day.
Series History:
The Mississippi State Bulldogs lead the series 8-2-2, with matches that started in 2002.
Last Meeting:
The last time these two teams met on the pitch was on Aug. 16, 2018, in Starkville, Miss., at the Mississippi State Soccer Field. Bulldog forward Makayla Waldner headed wide to the center of the box within the first three minutes of the match. Later forward Gabriella Coleman found the back of the net twice with a header off a cross into the box and then a header off a deep ball into the box at the 80th minute mark to advance their lead and win the match 3-0.
Last Time in Hattiesburg:
The Golden Eagles and Bulldogs last met in Hattiesburg on Sept. 4, 2016, as Mississippi State won the match 1-0.
The Opponent:
Head coach James Armstrong leads the Mississippi State Bulldogs for his fourth season. The squad succeeded in their 2020 fall season when the Bulldogs finished its eight-game, conference-only regular season at 2-3-3. With Coach Armstrong's direction, they reached the SEC Tournament for their second year in a row.
As of right now, for the 2022 season, Mississippi State holds a 4-0-2 record.
