HATTIESBURG, Miss.—The Southern Miss women's soccer team fell (3-1) to the LSU Tigers Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
"We are growing and getting better, it is unfortunate we didn't execute assignments and got behind, but I am very pleased where we are," said head coach Mohammed El-Zare.
The Golden Eagles refused to let the Tigers find the back of the net in the first half, with the score 0-0 exiting the period.
At the 51st minute mark of the match LSU forward Alesia Garcia netted the ball.
The Black and Gold fought back hard, and midfielder Ilana Izquierdo found the equalizer with an assist from midfielder Bernadett Stefan.
The Tigers responded with back-to-back goals in the second period when LSU midfielder Brenna McPartlan scored three minutes after Izquierdo's equalizer, advancing their score 2-1.
LSU maintained their lead with 21 minutes left in the period. The Tigers defender Olivia Wilkes received an assist from defender Maya Gordon for the final goal of the day.
Despite the loss, Goalkeeper Alex Helbling dominated the match in saves with three over LSU in the first half, and in the second grabbed four more.
