The Golden Eagles Finalize Preparations for Season Opener at USA Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The 2022-2023 season for the Southern Miss women's golf team will begin this weekend with the USA Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove Golf Club in Mobile, Alabama.Â
The Golden Eagles are in their final week of practice before heading to Mobile for the three-day event that will start with the first rounds on Saturday at 8 a.m and conclude on Monday with the final rounds. The starting times for the final rounds will be determined after the second round on Sunday.Â
For the second-straight season, Southern Miss is heading back to the 6,110-yard course at Magnolia Golf Club, but with four returners and two newcomers in the lineup this time.
The returners for the Golden Eagles include Momoka Ando, Friend Chompitakdacha, Elena Melich, and Jacee Fields. At last year's USA Intercollegiate, Chompitakdacha had the best finish for the Golden Eagles, finishing tied for 29th. Melich had a strong debut as a freshman and finished 32nd, right behind her teammate. The two international newcomers who will debut as Golden Eagles this weekend are Alma Betoret and Fernanda Gorostiaga from Spain. Betoret is from Valencia, Spain, where she is the 2022 Copa de Alicante Champion. Gorostiaga is from Vitoria, Spain, where she played for the Larrabea golf club.
Southern Miss will be joined by UAB, Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Houston Baptist, ULM, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, UT Arlington, Troy, and Western Kentucky.
