HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Graduate transfer Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) led four Southern Miss men's golfer with first-round under par scores to put the Golden Eagles into a three-way tie for fifth after the opening day of the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Choudrant, La.
The event, which is being played at the par 72, 7,105-yard Squire Creek Country and Golf Club, sees the Golden Eagles post a 10-under 278 over the first-round circuit.
"Today was a good start to the tournament for our team," said Southern Miss fifth-year coach Eddie Brescher. "Our guys rallied in the middle and later part of the round to post a good team score. The greens are a little slower and more receptive than what we are used to in this tournament. That always equates to lower scoring for the field. We still have a lot of golf to play. We're well with striking distance through the first round."
Clarke, who shot a first-round 68, tied for second on the day in the 124-player field with seven birdies and ranks tied for eighth in the field.
Junior Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) shot a 69 to hold down a 16th-place tie, while junior Robbie Latter added a 70 to tie for 24th. Sophomore Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a one-under 71 for a 41st-place tie and sophomore Cameron Guidry (Picayune, Miss.) collected a 75 to tie for 92nd-place.
The Golden Eagles sits four strokes behind leader ULM (274) in the 23-team field. Both host Louisiana Tech and Houston are two strokes back of the Warhawks at 276 in second place, while UTSA sits in fourth at 277. Southern Miss finds itself tied with LSU and Middle Tennessee for fifth place.
Round two for the Golden Eagles starts at 11 a.m., Monday, with the final round set for Tuesday.
