HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Junior Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) posted a career-low round of 66, Monday, to propel Southern Miss into first place in the 10th annual Jim Rivers Intercollegiate, which is being played at the Squire Creek Country and Golf Club in Choudrant, La.
"Another great day for the Golden Eagles on the golf course," said Southern Miss men's golf coach Eddie Brescher. "We held steady all day with a very solid performance by our team. Our guys are learning to minimize the mistakes and rallying around each other. They signal each other on the course with celebrations and embrace the team concept. We have a great team full of talent and great people. It's fun to watch."
Rattanyanon, who is tied for first in the individual competition, shot a four-under par over his first nine holes on the day and then overcome a pair of back-to-back bogies on the back nine as he also tallied four more birdies to complete his stellar round. He two-round, 135-stroke total sees him tied with Max Kreikemeier of Missouri State at the top of the leaderboard at the par 72, 7,105-yard course.
The Golden Eagles shot the lowest team round of the day with a 276, behind four Golden Eagles shooting par or below to jump Southern Miss from a fifth-place tie after the opening day to holding a four-stroke lead over LSU after 36 holes with a 22-under 574 team score.
Ryan Dupuy also added a career-low round of his own of 67 for Southern Miss to place tied for fifth after 36 holes with a 138-stroke total.
"Thongpipat and Ryan played great today," said Brescher. "Very steady and solid golf. Funny thing is, they each wanted to be low man for the team today. That is awesome for our team. Competition pushes each other to be better."
Cameron Guidry (Picayune, Miss.) added a 71, while Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) posted an even par 72 and Cameron Clarke (Pittsboro, Miss.) totaled a 73. Heading into the final round, Guidry is tied for 19th with a 141 total, while Latter is tied for 27th (142) and Clarke holds a 68th-place tie (146).
"I'm very proud of Guidry for bouncing back for his team," said Brescher. "For a guy to be in the lineup for the first time in his career, he isn't showing any nerves and is stepping up for the boys. We love to see that."
The final round begins at 8 a.m., Tuesday, with the Golden Eagles being the last group off hole No. 1. Fans can follow the live action by clicking here.
