Golden Eagles Clipped By Auburn In Season Opener

AUBURN, Ala.-- Southern Miss Golden Eagles were defeated by the Auburn Tigers 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer complex for their season opener.
The first goal came from a bouncing ball served into the box by Auburn forward Maddie Simpson at the 8-minute mark in the first half. This gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Simpson's first-half goal was her first of the 2022 season. Auburn captain Anna Haddock kept their lead with a goal scored in the 34th minute in the bottom right of the goal with an assist from midfielder Hannah Waesch.
The Black and Gold tried to get a foothold in the game but fell short as the first half concluded with the Tigers leading 3-0.
In the second half of play, defender Hayden Colson netted the ball in the bottom right of the goal with a double assist by Waesch and midfielder Sydney Richards. This extended their lead to 4-0.
The Golden Eagles struggled as the match continued as Auburn refused to let them make their four shots on the pitch.
The Auburn Tigers scored their last goal in the 81st minute of the match, scoring 9-0.
Despite the loss, Southern Miss finished the match with a 5-2 save advantage over Auburn.
Looking ahead: The Golden Eagles are set to play the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Ala, Thursday, August 25, at 6 p.m.
