HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team heads to Montgomery, Ala. for a Sunday matchup with the Alabama State Lady Hornets. The Golden Eagles look to build momentum in preparation for the Conference USA Championships later this month with a win on the road.
The Golden Eagles (12-3, 2-1 C-USA) last took the court last weekend for a pair of Conference USA matches in Ruston, La. Southern Miss knocked off LA Tech for the first time since 2016 by a score of 4-1.
The Black & Gold picked up the doubles point, and singles victories from Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, Monique Burton and Suhana Das lifted Southern Miss to its second C-USA win of the season. The Golden Eagles fell to the UAB Blazers the following day, 4-2, in a neutral-site contest.
Southern Miss has had an impressive season thus far, as the Black & Gold finished their home slate undefeated with seven victories. The Golden Eagles will look for this success to translate to Sunday's matchup with Alabama State.
The Lady Hornets enter Sunday's matchup with a record of 10-7, including a mark of 8-1 against opponents from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Alabama State has knocked off the likes of Alcorn and MVSU with ease, just as Southern Miss has. ASU's lone conference loss came at the hands of Jackson State, an opponent Southern Miss defeated, 4-1.
Southern Miss has defeated Alabama State in its last two meetings, dating back to 2016. The Golden Eagles travel to Montgomery for the first time since 2016, when they defeated the Lady Hornets, 7-0.
