
Golden Eagles Set to Tee Off in Regular Season Finale Friday Morning

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --Â The Southern Miss women's golf team is set to tee off at the Jan Weaver Classic in Murray, Kent. on Friday morning to close out the regular season tournament slate. The two-day, 11-team event at Miller Memorial Golf Course will feature 36 holes of play on Friday before an 18-hole outing on Saturday morning. Both days will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a 10th-place finish at the Chattanooga Classic two weeks ago that saw freshman Elena Melich earn her third top-20 finish of the season. Melich finished even-par on the final day to jump up three spots on the leaderboard and finish tied for 20th. Melich also leads all Golden Eagles in strokes per round at 74.88 and has recorded seven rounds at par or better.Â
Head coach Lucy Nunn Burke tabbed Momoka Ando, Friend Chompitakdacha, Merche Corbacho, Jacee Fields and Melich as the five Golden Eagles to participate this weekend. Fields is making her first appearance since the MountainView Collegiate in the middle of March. The other four all competed at the Chattanooga Classic two weekends ago.Â
The field in Murray includes Murray State (host), Austin Peay, Belmont, Evansville, Fort Wayne, North Carolina A&T, North Dakota, Samford, Southern Miss, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. The Racers are reigning champs and have won nine other times since the inaugural tournament in 2003. Friday will mark Southern Miss' first time in the state of Kentucky since the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup in 2007.Â
