HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The No. 4 Southern Miss baseball team continues its five-game road swing with a Conference USA weekend series against UAB set for Young Memorial Field in Birmingham, Ala. Game one of the series is Friday at 6 p.m.
The Golden Eagles (33-8 overall, 16-2 C-USA) enjoy being atop the league standings by four games over both Louisiana Tech and UTSA with 12 games left in the conference schedule.
Southern Miss enters the weekend having won a school-record 15 games in a row after defeating Southeastern Louisiana 9-4 in Hammond on Tuesday night to start this road swing. The program also has won 20 of the last 21 and 23 of the last 25 games as well bring a nation's best 12-game road winning streak into the weekend.
The team also needs just one victory this weekend to give Scott Berry his 469th victory as head coach and becoming the program's all-time winningest coach, surpassing Hill Denson who coached the program from 1984-1997.
This will be the final C-USA series between the Golden Eagles and Blazers (23-16, 8-10). The two teams have met in baseball 115 times in a series that dates to 1980 and Southern Miss holds a 76-39 advantage. That includes a four-game sweep of the Blazers last year in Hattiesburg.
The Golden Eagles are fresh off a 9-4 road victory at Southeastern Louisiana in which they belted two home runs in the contest. The team has homered in 22 of the last 26 contests and hit 41 of the squad's 51 homers during that time.
Over the last 25 games, the Golden Eagle offense has generated a .300 batting average with 40 homers and 171 RBI.
Sophomore Dustin Dickerson continues to lead the squad in hitting with a .349 average, followed by Slade Wilks at .319 and Reece Ewing at .304. Wilks has missed the last four games with an oblique injury but is with the team this weekend and could return to action. Ewing, though, has a hand injury and is not expected to play this weekend.
The rotation, which has been the right-handed trio Tanner Hall (7-0, 1.94 ERA), Hunter Riggins (5-2, 2.89 ERA) and Hurston Waldrep (4-1, 2.09 ERA) for the last six weeks will remain this same this weekend against the Blazers.
UAB enters the weekend having been swept at Charlotte last weekend.
The Friday game will be web streamed through ESPN+, with the two remaining games set to air on CUSA.TV. The game times for Saturday and Sunday are 2 p.m., and 1 p.m., respectively.
