Baseball Entertains C-USA Foe Rice in Weekend Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the first time in three weekends, No. 6 Southern Miss returns home for a Conference USA series when they entertain Rice in a three-game series. The set starts Friday with a 6 p.m., game at Pete Taylor Park.
The Golden Eagles (29-8 overall, 13-2 C-USA) enters the weekend on top of the league standings, sitting two games ahead of second place Louisiana Tech. The Owls (11-26, 4-11) are in a three-way tie for 10th place in the league, even with FIU and WKU.
Heading into the weekend, Southern Miss brings an 11-game winning streak – the fourth longest streak under 13th-year head coach Scott Berry. The Golden Eagles have also won 16 of their last 17 and 19 of their last 21 games. The Owls come into the weekend having won three of their last 13 contests.
The Golden Eagles trail in the series versus the Owls that began in 2006, 30-25, but have won five of the last six meetings and Berry enjoys a 21-20 record against Rice since the start of the 2010 campaign.
The two school have met in the C-USA tournament title contest five times with the Owls winning three times. The two teams played to win the tournament title in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2017. The duo also tied for the regular season crown in both the 2011 and 2013 campaigns.
Three Golden Eagles hold a .300 batting mark or higher heading into the series with shortstop Dustin Dickerson leading the way with a .347 average. Designated Slade Wilks is next at .319 followed by left fielder Reece Ewing at .300. First baseman Christopher Sargent leads the team in both home runs (11) and RBI (34) this spring.
All three games can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network as well as via webstream at ESPN+.
The middle game of the set takes place 2 p.m., Saturday, with the finale set for 1 p.m., Sunday.
