Women's Tennis Falls to UAB, 4-2

RUSTON, La. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team fell on Saturday afternoon to the UAB Blazers by a score of 4-2. The Golden Eagles opened the match by winning the doubles point against the Blazers, but dropped four singles matches. The Black & Gold return to Hattiesburg with a 1-1 record in Ruston.
Clara Tardivel was successful in singles and doubles competition against the Blazers. Tardivel opened her day with a doubles victory alongside Suhana Das before knocking off Maggie White in straight sets.
"Today was another very good match for us, despite the loss," head coach Steve Schram said. "I'm very pleased with the way everyone fought. We started strong in doubles and won the first point. We will get ready for the last two regular season matches before heading to the conference tournament."
The Golden Eagles (12-3, 2-1 C-USA) opened the match by taking doubles matches on court one and court two. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton knocked off UAB's first pair, Sydney Clarke and Maggie White, in dominant fashion.
Das and Tardivel defeated Adela Wasserbauerova and Mackenzie White by a score of 6-2 to clinch the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for Southern Miss. Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Alyssa Richter led their doubles match by a score of 5-4 before play was halted.
In singles competition, Tardivel won on court four in two sets, but the Golden Eagles dropped four matches as UAB clinched the win. Richter held a large lead on court five in the third set, but the match went unfinished after the Blazers secured the victory.
Next Up:
The Golden Eagles travel to Montgomery, Ala. for a match against the Alabama State Lady Hornets before closing out the regular season against New Orleans on the road. Southern Miss then heads to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for the Conference USA Championships.
