Golden Eagles Arrive in Florida Eying C-USA Championships

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team has arrived in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. with its eyes set on the Conference USA Championships that kickoff on Monday morning. The three-day event is set to take place at historic PGA National Resort.

Reigning C-USA Freshman of the Year Merche Corbacho is only a year removed from an impressive ninth-place finish at the C-USA Championships where the Golden Eagles finished eighth as a team. Junior Friend Chompitakdacha finished 12th on the individual leaderboard after a second-round 72 vaulted her up the leaderboard.
Elena Melich, Momoka Ando, Friend Chompitakdacha, Jacee Fields and Corbacho will be the five Golden Eagles teeing off on Monday morning. Melich, Ando and Fields will all be making their postseason debut, while Corbacho and Chompitakdacha are returning for another swing at the title.
Melich and Ando are both on pace to finish top-10 in single-season low individual stroke average in the program record book. Melich's team-leading 75.23 stroke average is seventh all-time and Ando's 75.48 is currently ninth all-time. Ando is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Jan Weaver Invitational and helped guide the Golden Eagles to a third-place finish on the team leaderboard.
Corbacho is averaging 76.48 strokes per round over eight tournaments, then Chompitakdacha averages 76.08 and Fields averaged 79.35.
North Texas snapped UTSA's title streak last season and captured its first C-USA Championship in program history. The Mean Green are ranked No. 44 in the Golfstat.com Rankings and are the highest-ranked C-USA team.
