PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. --Â Merche Corbacho became the third Golden Eagle in Southern Miss women's golf history to be named to the Conference USA All-Tournament Team after the freshman finished in a tie for third at PGA National Resort on Wednesday afternoon.
"Today was a rough way to finish the Spring, but we got better this year," said head coach Lucy Nunn Burke. "We are incredibly proud of the fight Merche put up this week and this week backs up what she accomplished her freshman year. The future looks good for these Golden Eagles."
The Golden Eagles finished in seventh as a team after sitting as high as fifth after the second round. Freshman Elena Melich claimed the low round for the Black and Gold today, firing a seven-over 79.
Corbacho finished the tournament with an eight-over 80 after sitting mid-70s the previous two rounds. The Castellon, Spain native recorded a birdie on the 18thhole to move into All-Tournament Team contention and had a birdie on the sixth hole. Junior Friend Chompitakdacha finished her junior campaign with an 86 on Wednesday and freshman Momoka Ando brought an 88 into the clubhouse.
Icie Cockerham made her postseason debut after filling in for Jacee Fields and fired a 16-over 88. Fields' low round of the tournament was a six-over 78 on the opening day.
North Texas repeated as tournament champions and Letizia Bagnoli (FAU) finished on top of the individual leaderboard. Corbacho's third-place finish marked the second-straight top-10 finish at the C-USA Championships for the freshman.
