RUSTON, La. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team knocked off the LA Tech Lady Techsters on the road on Friday, April 1. The Golden Eagles picked up their second road win of the season by a score of 4-1, and extend their win streak to four matches.
The Black & Gold (12-2, 2-0 C-USA) handed LA Tech its fourth loss in 20 matches this season, and its second home loss of the year. The Golden Eagles won the doubles point, before taking three singles matches to close out a strong performance in Ruston.
"This is a great win for this team," head coach Steve Schram said following the victory. "LA Tech has had a tremendous season, and we knew it would be a battle. I am so proud of the way we fought today."
Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel knocked off the pair of Ana Rodrigues and Leonie Schuknecht by a score of 6-3 on court two, before Alyssa Richter and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan clinched the doubles point for the Golden Eagles with a close 7-6 victory. LA Tech's win on court one was not enough to hold off Southern Miss, as the Black & Gold took the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles did not allow LA Tech to get back into the contest, as singles wins from Yazgan, Das and Burton sealed the victory for Southern Miss. Yazgan defeated Schuknecht in three frames, while Burton and Das dispatched their foes in straight sets.
Sarah Medik and Tardivel held leads in their singles contests before play was stopped after Southern Miss clinched the win. The Lady Techsters picked up a point on court six, but it was not enough to complete a comeback.
The Golden Eagles have defeated LA Tech in consecutive matches, dating back to last season.
