BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Christopher Sargent and Slade Wilks combined to drive in seven runs and Hurston Waldrep threw a three-hit shutout as Southern Miss captured an 11-0 seven-inning, run-rule victory to complete a three-game Conference USA sweep Sunday afternoon at Nick Denes Field.
The Golden Eagles improved to 17-7 overall and 5-1 in C-USA play as they combined for 35 runs, 49 hits and 10 home runs in the three-game set. It was the first sweep of a league foe since beating Middle Tennessee in four games last season.
Sargent, who finished the weekend going 10-for-15, led the Golden Eagles with three hits and drove in four runs, while Wilks went 1-for-3 with a three-run homer. Both Sargent and Wilks ended the weekend with four home runs each.
Waldrep (2-1) picked up his first complete game as he limited the Hilltoppers (9-14, 1-5) to just three base runners, all on hits, to go along with a career-best 13 strikeouts in the seven-inning game. The right-handed hurler did not allow a walk to earn the victory and improve to 2-1.
He is the first Golden Eagle to register 13 strikeouts since Tanner Hall did it earlier this month against Mississippi State in Pearl. Waldrep retired eight straight batters at one point and then nine in a row later in the contest.
Slade Wilks, who has now homered in his last four games, opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles with a three-run blast to right center in the opening frame. Wilks drove in both Dustin Dickerson and Reece Ewing with his fifth blast of the year, after both runners who scored on the play singled with one out. Dickerson increased his hitting streak to seven games with his single.
The Golden Eagles then broke open the game with five more runs in the second. After Will McGillis led off the frame and went to third on a Carson Paetow groundout, Rodrigo Montenegro singled him in. Gabe Montenegro followed with a single of his own before Dickerson added a run-scoring single.
Christopher Sargent, now has seven homers against the Hilltoppers in his career, blasted a Devyn Terbrak pitch over the left-center field wall to give the Eagles a 8-0 advantage.
McGillis added to the Golden Eagle total in the third with a solo home run to left field, his fifth, to give the visitors a 9-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles then pushed the lead to double digits with another run in the fourth. Dickerson reached base on a WKU fielding error and later scored on a Sargent single.
It was McGillis that got things going in the fifth with a triple. He scored the team's final run one batter later as Paetow plated him with a single to center.
Terbrak gave up nine runs on nine hits with a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 3-1.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they welcome Louisiana Tech to Pete Taylor Park in league series next weekend. The set opens Friday at 6 p.m.
