
Women's Tennis Defeats Jackson State on Senior Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team defeated the Jackson State Tigers at home on Saturday, March 26 by a score of 4-1. The Golden Eagles picked up their 29th-straight victory at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex, as the Black & Gold celebrated Monique Burton on her Senior Day.
The Golden Eagles (9-2, 1-0 C-USA) opened the match by winning the doubles point against the Tigers. Sarah Medik and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan knocked off the pair of Sherine Salem and Tyra-Nicole Whyte, 6-0, before Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel defeated Zeina Shaban/Natalya Ogunwale to claim a 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Burton dominated Paula Arcarons in straight sets, before Suhana Das won her singles match on court three. Maddison Ricardo improved to 3-0 on the season with her win over Natalya Ogunwale on court five, which clinched the victory for the Golden Eagles.
Head coach Steve Schram sand the praises of his team and senior, Burton, following his team's ninth victory of the season.
"I'm very proud of the team, especially Monique," Schram said. "She has been a huge part of this team's success over the past four seasons. Her infectious attitude and relentless work ethic have played a huge role in her development as a person and tennis player."
The Golden Eagles improved to 6-0 at home on the season and handed the Tigers their fifth loss of the 2022 season. Southern Miss has defeated Jackson State 12 times since 2010.

The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow at home against the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. and admission at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is free.
