HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's tennis team returns home for a pair of matches this weekend against a pair of in-state foes. The Golden Eagles will take on the Jackson State Tigers on Saturday before squaring off with the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles (8-2, 1-0 C-USA) are set to host the Tigers and Devilettes following a loss to South Alabama on March 19. Southern Miss was swept for the first time this season and looks to bounce back with a pair of wins as the Conference USA Championships approach.
Southern Miss has been stellar in doubles competition this season, going 8-2 in this season. The highlight of the Golden Eagles' doubles season came against then-No. 55-ranked Mississippi State on Feb.26, when Southern Miss took the doubles point against the Bulldogs, following a victory from Monique Burton and Sarah Medik against the No. 39-ranked pair in the nation.
Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State will serve as Southern Miss' first two foes from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). The Golden Eagles have gone 6-0 against SWAC opponents dating back to 2020 and look to extend that streak this weekend.
The Tigers enter Saturday's matchup with a record of 10-4, including a 7-0 mark in conference play, which includes a win over MVSU earlier this season. Jackson State is led by head coach Gabrielle Moore who led the program to a 9-4 record last season.
Mississippi Valley State has struggled this season, coming into Sunday's contest with an 0-12 record. The Devilettes dropped a 4-0 match against Jackson State on March 18 and travel to Hattiesburg for the third time since 2018.
The Golden Eagles will host a Senior Day celebration for Monique Burton prior to their match with Jackson State on Saturday. The Sydney, Australia native has been a key contributor for Southern Miss' program since joining the team in 2019.
Since 2010, Southern Miss faced off with Jackson State 11 times, emerging victorious on every occasion. The Golden Eagles have squared off with MVSU twice since 2018, winning both contests in sweeps.
The Southern Miss women's tennis team hosts Jackson State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, before taking on MVSU on Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex is free, and fans can follow the women's tennis team on Twitter, @SouthernMissWTN for updates.
