HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The tough March schedule concludes this weekend for Southern Miss baseball as they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for a three-game Conference USA series against WKU at Nick Denes Field.
All three games can be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and will be available via webstream through the Hilltopper Sports Satellite Network.
The Golden Eagles (14-7 overall, 2-1 C-USA) hold a 9-5 record this month that have included midweek victories over Mississippi State, South Alabama, Tulane, Alabama and New Orleans, while also winning two of three on the road at Louisiana as well as a pair of triumphs in the team's C-USA opening series with Florida Atlantic last weekend.
This marks the first trip for the program to WKU (9-11, 1-2) since the 2017 season in which they swept a series there. The Golden Eagles also won two of three Bowling Green when the two programs met for the first time during the 2015 campaign. Southern Miss leads the overall series 14-3, including an 11-1, eight-inning win over the Hilltoppers in the opening round of last season's C-USA Tournament in Ruston, La.
That contest, which was the last one slated for the opening day, did not get started until 12:15 a.m. with the last pitch thrown at 2:59 a.m.
As for WKU, they come into the weekend having lost three-straight games. The Hilltoppers won their series opener last weekend at Charlotte and scored four in the ninth in the finale, but the 49ers rallied with two in the bottom of the ninth to win the series. The losing streak continued with a 9-8 home loss to Evansville on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles snapped a brief one-game losing streak with a 12-8 win at New Orleans Wednesday. The team collected 11 hits, including home runs from Carson Paetow, Christopher Sargent and Slade Wilks.
Both Wilks and Dustin Dickerson lead the Golden Eagles in hitting this spring with .329 averages, while Reece Ewing is next at .293 to go along with a team-best five home runs. Will McGillis leads the offense in RBI with 18 after driving home a run with a double against the Privateers.
Southern Miss plans to utilize the same rotation as they did last weekend with three right-handed pitchers getting the call. Sophomore Tanner Hall (2-0, 2.33 ERA) will be on the bump for the opening game on Friday, followed by graduate transfer Hunter Riggins (3-1, 1.17 ERA) and Hurston Waldrep (1-1, 3.27 ERA) in that order.
Following the WKU series, the Golden Eagles will not have any midweek contests and return to action at home next weekend with league foe Louisiana Tech.
