Baseball Returns Home Wednesday to Face Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns home for the first of four home games this week when they entertain Alabama in a Wednesday, March 16, non-conference contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The two teams were originally slated to play, Tuesday, but forecasted rain in the area necessitated the game being pushed back a day.
Southern Miss (10-6) looks to rebound against the Crimson Tide (12-5) after getting swept at Dallas Baptist over the weekend. The Crimson Tide, which swept Binghamton at home this past weekend and is under the direction of fifth-year coach Brad Bohannon, heads to Hattiesburg for the first time since the 2016 season.
The two teams resumed its series last season in Tuscaloosa with the Golden Eagles taking a 5-4 decision on Gabe Montenegro's two-run double in the seventh. The Golden Eagles rallied from behind twice in the contest and Blake Wehunt, the seventh of 10 Southern Miss pitchers in the contest, got the victory.
Speaking on Montenegro, he continues to climb on the Southern Miss career offensive charts and currently ranks in the Top 10 in three categories. The senior from Guatemala City, Guatemala, holds the No. 6 spot in singles (201), No. 7 in runs scored (184) and No. 8 in hits (268), while almost ranking in several other categories.
Dustin Dickerson continues to lead the Golden Eagles offensively with a .322 average, followed by Reece Ewing at .316, Slade Wilks at .315 and Gabe Montenegro at .303.
Ewing also leads the team in home runs with four and is tied for the team lead in RBI at 11 with Will McGillis.
Southern Miss will send junior left-hander Drew Boyd (0-0, 6.75) to the mound for his first start of the year and 16th of his career. He will be opposed by freshman right-hander Ben Hess (0-1, 18.00 ERA).
The Golden Eagles return home this weekend for the opening of Conference USA play when they entertain Florida Atlantic. Game times are set for 6 p.m. (Friday), 2 p.m. (Saturday) and 10:30 a.m. (Sunday).
