
Baseball Falls in Series Finale 10-4 at Dallas Baptist Sunday

DALLAS – Blayne Jones collected five hits and drove in three runs to help Dallas Baptist complete a three-game sweep of Southern Miss with a 10-4 victory at Horner Ballpark Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (10-6) were swept in a three-game series for the first time since the 2016 season in a in a Conference USA set at FIU. DBU improved to 9-6 on the year.
DBU collected a season-high 19 hits against six Southern Miss pitchers, while Patriot reliever Zane Russell threw a perfect sixth inning to get credited with the victory and improve to 1-0 on the year.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the weekend with a pair of runs in the first. After drawing three walks to load the bases off DBU starter Ryan Johnson, Danny Lynch singled to right-center and drove home both runs.
That lead was short-lived as the Patriots registered four singles and took advantage of two walks and a Golden Eagle error to score three times in their half of the first.
With runners at first and second, a Hurston Waldrep pitch went into the turf and Rodrigo Montenegro tried to throw out the lead runner who was advancing on the play. That throw was wide of the bag and went into left field to allow the first run to score. Cole Moore then knocked in the second run in with a single, before Luke Heefer added an RBI single of his own.
Waldrep, who made his third start of the year, ended taking the loss in the contest as he allowed five runs on five hits with three walks in one-plus innings of work to fall to 1-1.
The Patriots added two more runs in the second. After a leadoff single and walk, Blayne Jones and Moore followed with RBI single in the stanza.
DBU added to its lead with a solo home run by George Specht, his team-leading fifth of the year, and a Nate Rombach RBI single in the fifth.
Down 7-2, the Golden Eagles cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth. Reece Ewing opened the inning with a homer to left-center, his team-leading fourth, before Christopher Sargent reached on a dropped fly ball in right. Slade Wilks then went the other way for a double to drive in the second run.
The home team, though, struck again in their half of the sixth. After a single to start the stanza, Jones got a wind-aided home run to left to make the score 9-2. DBU added to its final tally with one more run in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Nathan Humphreys.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they entertain Alabama in a 6 p.m., contest Tuesday at Pete Taylor Park.
