HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- A layup from Kelsey Jones with 3.3 seconds remaining in overtime propelled the Lady Eagle basketball team over the UTSA Roadrunners by a score of 60-57. Southern Miss picked up its 15th win of the season and improved to 10-2 at Reed Green Coliseum.
Domonique Davis recorded her 13th-straight double-digit scoring performance and was one of four Lady Eagles (15-7, 7-4 C-USA) to finish the contest in double-figures. Davis (12), Melyia Grayson (12), Destiny Smith (10) and Jones (10) led the charge for Southern Miss offensively, as the Black & Gold picked up its fourth-straight win.
Southern Miss and UTSA battled in a defensive first quarter, as neither team managed to generate consistent offense. The Black & Gold were able to hold the Roadrunners to just 4-of-13 from the field, but could not solve UTSA's defense, shooting at just a 23.4 percent clip in the opening frame.
Smith and Jones both recorded four points in the first quarter as Southern Miss finished the first ten minutes of play at a 10-10 deadlock with UTSA. The Lady Eagles found success inside the lane, recording all but two points in the paint to open the contest.
The Lady Eagles opened the second stanza with a 9-0 run in the opening five minutes, with baskets from Davis, Daishai Almond, Grayson and Jones propelling the Black & Gold to a 19-10 lead. Southern Miss held UTSA scoreless for the first 4:53 of the second frame, but faltered defensively, giving up a 7-0 run in just over a minute and a half.
While UTSA continued to knock on the door, Southern Miss refused to concede the lead throughout the second quarter, as the Lady Eagles held a 26-25 lead into the third frame. Six points from Davis and Grayson led a much more effective Southern Miss offense, as the Black & Gold went 7-of-13 from the field, while converting 10 points off of Roadrunner turnovers.
The third quarter saw back-and-forth action, as Southern Miss and UTSA jockeyed for position. While the Golden Eagles held the advantage for the majority of the period, the Roadrunners made timely baskets to remain in the contest.
A layup in the final minute of the third quarter from Grayson gave the Lady Eagles a 40-36 lead heading into the final frame of regulation. Grayson, Smith and Brikayla Gray led the charge offensively in the penultimate quarter, posting 13 of their squad's 14 points.
A buzzer-beating layup from UTSA's Jadyn Pimentel tied the game at 49-49, sending the contest to overtime. A spirited extra frame saw multiple lead changes and tied scores, as Southern Miss and UTSA exchanged baskets throughout a furious five minutes of basketball.
"I knew when we went to overtime that I was coming in," Jones said. "I had to get my mind right so we could do what we needed to get the win."
Jones stepped up to the challenge, as with 3.3 seconds remaining, the Starkville, Miss. native battled inside the lane and converted a tough layup to give Southern Miss the 59-57 lead.
A final turnover from UTSA sealed the victory for the Lady Eagles, as Southern Miss overcame the Roadrunners in its first overtime contest of the 2021-22 season.
"It's just another step for us in this journey," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said following the win. "We did not allow the game to slip away. It showed some true resilience."
Southern Miss will look to complete a flawless four-game home stand on Thursday, Feb. 10 against UAB. The battle of the top two teams in the C-USA West will tip off at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
