Hattiesburg, Miss. – In a battle for the top spot in the west division, Southern Miss women's basketball team was unable to overcome a sluggish start falling to UAB, 68-61, on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum, ending their four-game win streak. "We were very slow today," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "I was disappointed in our effort and energy. I don't think we were very locked in. Players that've we've depending on this season didn't show up tonight and I thought that cost us." In a night where the Lady Eagles (15-8, 7-5 C-USA) struggled to get going offensively, Kelsey Jones and Brikayla Gray were a pair of bright spots. Jones finished the contest with a team-leading 14 points, while Gray joined her in double-figures with 12 points to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Daishai Almond dished out seven assists and has now had six or more assists in four of the last five games. Offensively, the Black and Gold had their worst shooting night of the season, going just 35.5 percent from the field, while also having their largest rebound deficit, as UAB (13-8, 6-4 C-USA) outrebounded the Lady Eagles by 14 in the contest. For the Blazers, Margaret Whitley led the way with 21 points, going 13-of-15 from the free-throw line, including 8-of-10 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Transfer forward Maria Roters finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. "This is going to teach us that we have to go harder," Gray said following the defeat. "We have to have our energy from the start of the first quarter to the end of the game." After going 3-1 in a grueling stretch of four games in seven days at home, Southern Miss returns to the road, traveling to the Lone Star State for matchups with UTSA and UTEP beginning next Thursday.
