HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Singles wins from Alyssa Richter, Ebru Zeynep Yazgan and Clara Tardivel propelled Southern Miss women's tennis program's 25th straight home victory. The Black & Gold defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in a clean 4-0 sweep on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Richter and Yazgan opened the afternoon with a 6-1 doubles win over Balsen Kaya and Anna Syrova. Moments later, Suhana Das and Tardivel secured the doubles point for the Black & Gold, defeating Dariana Prato and Ella Tuomela, 6-2. Sarah Medik and Monique Burton's doubles contest went unfinished, but led 4-3 before Southern Miss clinched the 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles (2-0, 0-0 C-USA), transitioned to singles action, which saw marked improvement over their season-opener. Tardivel dispatched Prato in a pair of 6-2 sets, improving the freshman's record 2-0 in singles competition.
Yazgan took care of business on court one, securing her first singles win of the season against Carolina Bulatovic in a competitive contest by set scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Richter capped off the afternoon for the Golden Eagles with a win over Tuomela (6-1, 6-4).
"I think we did a better job than last week," Yazgan said. "We were more comfortable and more used to the atmosphere of the season. Everyone fought great. We were louder and we were more focused. I'm genuinely so proud of this team and excited for the rest of the season."
While the final three singles matches went unfinished, Medik, Burton and Das all held advantages over their opponents when the match was called. Southern Miss has yet to concede a single point through the opening two matches of the 2022 season.
Southern Miss secured its 25th home win in a row, keeping head coach Steve Schram's record in Hattiesburg spotless in the process. The Golden Eagles picked up their third victory over Jacksonville State in Schram's tenure.
"We had very good performances today, overall," Schram said. "All three doubles teams competed well and in singles, everyone competed very well. They started to pick up their level as the matches went on and made the proper adjustments to get over the hump and seal the victory."
