Southern Miss Defeats Chattanooga in 4-3 Thriller

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss edged out the Chattanooga Mocs in a hard fought match on Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagles prevailed by a score of 4-3 to pick up their 26th-straight home win in Hattiesburg on Feb.11.
Standout performances in singles competition led the way for the Golden Eagles, as Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, Sarah Medik, Suhana Das and Clara Tardivel launched Southern Miss to its third win of the season.
In doubles matches, Das and Tardivel fell to Coco Bosman and Emma Van Hee of Chattanooga, 6-1. Yazgan and Alyssa Richter lost to Caroline Gibbens and Nicole Abel of UTC, 6-4. Medik and Monique Burton led their match, 4-3 before doubles play was stopped.
The Golden Eagles (3-0, 0-0 C-USA), shifted to singles action as Tardivel handled Callie Billman with score sets of 6-2 and 6-3. This improved the freshman's record 3-0 in singles competition.
Yazgan dominated on court one, she secured her second singles win of the season against Nicole Abel by set scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Medik triumphed over Jessie Young in set two and three with 6-3 and 6-2.
Das dispatched her singles foe, Emma Van Hee with 6-2 and 6-4 scores in her second and third set.
Head coach Steve Schram's record remains unblemished at home as the leader of Southern Miss' program, while the Golden Eagles picked up their first matchup victory against Chattanooga.
"It was an amazing match," Schram said following the victory. "We were pushed to the limit and we were able to pull through with the win."
Next Up:
The Golden Eagles head to Thibodaux, La. for a neutral site matchup with Sam Houston State. First serve is slated for 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13.
