MIAMI, Fla. --Â Jaron Pierre, Jr. and Tyler Stevenson each scored 21 points on Thursday night at FIU (13-9, 3-6 C-USA), but the Panthers came from behind to defeat the Southern Miss (6-15, 1-7 C-USA) men's basketball team, 77-67, in front of a raucous crowd at Ocean Bank Convocation Center.Â
"They had a big crowd in here tonight and it helped them get into it when they were down," said Southern Miss head coach Jay Ladner. "Our guys played together and played hard. We played our tails off against a really good team.
"I told our guys to just stay the course and keep plugging because eventually something will happen because we're doing too many good things."
The Golden Eagles were in control at the half after trailing early in the opening frame, but a 17-2 run put the Black and Gold in front by three points with five minutes left on the clock. Junior Isaih Moore scored seven of his nine points in that stretch and threw down a rim-rattling dunk to put the Golden Eagles ahead. Pierre and Mo Arnold knocked down three-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor to push the Southern Miss advantage to six. Tevin Brewer and Pierre traded another pair of triples before Denver Jones hit one of his own to make it a three-point game at the break.
After scoring only four points in the first half, Stevenson caught fire in the opening minutes of the second half. The Columbus, Miss. native poured in 14 points in first seven minutes of the half to put the Golden Eagles ahead by seven with 14:27 left in the ballgame. FIU slowly chipped into its deficit and pulled back within three on a Jones triple with 10 minutes left. Three minutes later and with the Southern Miss lead now at two, the Panthers went on a 15-0 run to flip it to a nine-point FIU lead.
Southern Miss went scoreless for a seven-minute stretch before Arnold and Stevenson cut the Panther lead to eight with 31 seconds left. Brewer converted four free throws over the final 30 seconds to hold on for the 10-point win.
The Golden Eagles shot 48.2 percent from the floor and knocked down eight three-pointers, including five by Pierre. The Panthers caught fire from deep in the second half as they knocked down eight of their 13 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes. FIU finished with a 50.0 percent shooting clip and hit 48.1 percent of its three-pointers.
Backed by Stevenson's 10 rebounds, Southern Miss outrebounded FIU 32-23. It was the third-largest rebounding differential in favor of the Golden Eagles against a Division I opponent this season. They outrebounded UC San Diego by nine and Montana by 13 -- both in wins at the Zootown Classic in Missoula, Mont.
Playing 21 miles from his high school gym, junior DeAndre Pinckney threw down a dunk to open the scoring for Southern Miss and finished with seven points and five rebounds. Arnold finished with seven points and four assists.
The Golden Eagles will head to Boca Raton Friday afternoon ahead of a Saturday afternoon showdown against FAU. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST.
