BOCA RATON, Fla. --Â Despite Jaron Pierre, Jr.'s third-straight game leading Southern Miss in scoring, FAU (14-9, 7-3 C-USA) downed the men's basketball team, 84-57, at FAU Arena on Saturday afternoon. It marked the fifth-straight loss for the Golden Eagles (6-16, 1-8 C-USA).
"We have gotten tons better. Is it good enough? No, but there is still fight left in these guys," said head coach Jay Ladner. "We just struggled consistently to get stops and then we weren't able to knock down good looks after getting those stops. However, I though our guys played their tails off tonight."
FAU hit five of its first seven shots to jump to an early lead and tacked on to it when the Golden Eagles missed eight-straight shots over a three-minute stretch. Mo Arnold hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it an eight-point game and ended the scoring drought, but the Owls continued to stay hot from the floor. The home team climbed to a 15-point lead with five minutes left in the half and led by as many as 18. Pierre and Tyler Stevenson went on a stretch over the last three minutes of the half where they scored on four consecutive trips up the floor to slice into the FAU lead, but Vladislav Goldin hit a pair of free throws to put the Owls ahead by 12 at halftime.Â
The Owls came out of the locker room and hit their first shot, then went on to miss the next three, but Southern Miss failed to capitalize. The Golden Eagles missed their first three shots of the half, while FAU pulled ahead by 16 in the opening minutes. The Owls continued to pour it on the Black and Gold as they led by 24 at the 10-minute mark of the second half and then the lead ballooned to 28 before the night ended. Southern Miss shot 37 percent from the floor in the second half and knocked down one three-pointer after hitting five in the first half.Â
Pierre finished in double figures for the 12th time this season and finished with 19 tonight. DeAndre Pinckney, a Carol City, Fla. native, finished with 12 points and five rebounds in front of family and friends.Â
Denijay Harris finished with a season-high 10 points and was on the finishing end of an alleyoop pass from Walyn Napper that rocked the rim. The Golden Eagles limited themselves to three turnovers in the first half, but turned the ball over eight times in the second half. Tyler Morman and Pinckney each pulled down two offensive boards -- Southern Miss finished with 32 rebounds to FAU's 40.Â

Southern Miss will head to UAB on Thursday, Feb. 10. Tipoff from Bartow Arena is slated for 6 p.m.
